#AMMConnect Bio

Hey there #AMMfam! I’m excited and anxious (anxited!!) to join Author Mentor Match this year. I can’t wait to browse the connect tag via Twitter and get outta my shell.

ABOUT ME

My name is Kerrilyn (keh-ree-lihn, please not Carolyn) Dasilva. I was born and raised in Toronto, Canada. I am a giant sucker for anything fantasy and culturally diverse books. Especially if the characters are unapologetically black.

FUN FACTS

  • I’ve travelled to British Colombia on a native resort. Hiking through the woods made me fall in love with nature and it’s greenerywhich is why my manuscript is full of forests… and those upturned tree roots!
  • I LOVE black cats and I have three of my own at home.
  • I occasionally draw my ocs and cry about them.
  • I am a giant fan of theories, whether they get debunked or not. I also love headcanons too.
  • Lastly, I love food yet I eat like a bird. So my main character eats for me. It’s not in every chapter but most always have her eating.

ABOUT MY MANUSCRIPT

The story follows Dyanthe, a seventeen-year-old girl who is born with the Light Brand, a mark that signifies she can wield the power of Amahtel, the God of the sun, light and order. Her neighbour, an aspiring enchantress, accidentally places a seal on her, causing her to lose all traces of magic. She has to remove it or it’ll eventually kill her.

MY MANUSCRIPT FEATURES

  • A diverse cast of characters
  • An intricate magic system
  • food (and lots of it)
  • Strong female heroines, who politically lead their country & people
  • Century old mages
  • Fairies
  • Dragons
  • Other monsters (mostly spliced together or dare I say)
  • LGTBQIA & ableism rep
  • Scenes of violence

IT DOESN’T FEATURE

  • Vampires
  • Werewolves
  • Zombies
  • Any mainstream monsters
  • Heaven/Hell elements

Anything else listed it’s not in my manuscript but I’ve probably missed something.

WRITING GOALS

When I was younger, I always wanted to write. I used to have notebooks filled with fanfics of my favorite characters adventuring together. I eventually transitioned to my first computer when I got it. I always loved writing fantasy. It allowed me to escape reality for a while and writing was my best friend growing up.

Now my dream is to see my name on a shelf and hopefully touch the hearts and minds of readers. I tend to get immersed in my own world and the world of others and I want that to happen to me, too! I hope to make potential readers question reality, get them rile up for the next scene, cry… see their theories.

WHY I’D MAKE A GOOD MENTEE

I love getting constructive criticism. Even if firm, I never make a fuss and just sit back while telling the little demon in my head to shut up because, you know what? They’re on to something. I’m getting help to grasp something I couldn’t get out or something that plain (…plane, get it?) flew over my head.

I used to think that my writing was bad if anyone criticized my work. Not anymore. If someone is willing to to be my coach and help me whip my manuscript into shape, you bet yourself I’m going to have to learn to accept feedback.

I’m also pretty positive and tend to think optimistically when it comes to my writing.

I’m proud of my world, my magic system, and characters in The Sealing Mark and I hope to give them just a little more foundation. I hope to make a few friends.

Art

I’m thinking of uploading some art of my character here but I’m thinking of maybe when I’m published? I dunno. I’m pretty tight lipped with my WIP already… I still gotta think on that

But other than that, I’m also thinking of opening up commissions. Money is tight and I want to try and save some money up to pay to pay some bills, know what I mean?

But I gotta make an official post with prices. Keep a look out for it!

Birthday update:

There was in fact a snowstorm.

Heck it’s still brewing outside! How lame. Luckily, I had bought pillsbury cookie dough and froze it. It’s a cute idea that I can’t believe I’m an adult right now!

Still, I am enjoying my day! ♡

It’s my birthday!

I know I haven’t been posting much! That’s because I’ve been sucked into KH3 hell and dedicated a week and a half to beat the full game. As soon as I finished, I began writing because I got a flurry of new ideas to implement in my book.

But today is my lazy day. Why not take the time of to enjoy the fact that in alive and another year older? I wish I could share cake with everyone, haha.

All I ask is for platonic hugs and kisses. I’m praying for no storm so I can go buy me some snacks.

Nearing the end of my revision

No one understands how giddy I feel right now! I am so close to the end of my revision. I can’t wait until I’m done so I can go over it and give it a good polishing.

I said it before but I am so proud how this revision turned out. I’m glad I asked for help with my query + synopsis or it would have remained the way it did.

There were a massive amount of changes done in the 6th draft from the 5th. And it’s a total different story down from the 1st! My main character is even a little different than how she started out, too. While in her current state she is back and forth with her options it’s reaching that peak where something is going to happen that will push her to look forward to her goal.

And there is a scene in the 6th draft that wasn’t even in the 5th and hopefully I can nail it to make it as memorable as I can. Oh man, this revision journey is coming to a close soon! I can taste it!

Making changes

This has been on my mind for a while now and it have everything to do with my revising of my book.

When making changes to my book, there are certain sacrifices I have to take in order to make it better. Those sacrifices often lead to me adding more and more text to me “deleted scenes” doc and it honestly kills me. But if I don’t delete it, my story won’t make as much sense as it did pre revision.

Certain scenes I just outright delete but others I actually save and see if it could work in another chapter or the future sequels.

Still it hurts. My WIP is my baby but I’ll do anything for it to be as perfect as it can be.
